Our vans are built to live off-grid, but a little understanding of your power system lets you go for longer and worry less. Here is how to get the most from your solar setup.
Understanding Your Solar System
Holly carries 400W of solar panels, leisure batteries, an MPPT solar controller and a 12V system. Sunlight charges the batteries through the day, and the batteries power your lights, fridge, pump and devices. The van also charges the batteries while you drive.
Maximizing Solar Charging
- Parking position matters: face the panels towards the sun
- Keep the panels clean and free of leaves
- Allow for shorter, lower-angle sun in winter

Power Consumption Guide
- Low draw: LED lights, USB charging, water pump
- Moderate draw: fridge, laptop charging, fans
- High draw: inverter and 240V devices, diesel heater start-up, extended pump use
- Very high draw: hair dryers, electric kettles and heating elements (avoid these off-grid)
The Fridge Reality
The fridge is usually your biggest constant draw. Set it sensibly, around 4°C for the fridge and -18°C for the freezer.
Monitoring Your System
Understanding Battery Levels
- Try never to drop below 50%
- 80-90% overnight is a great place to be
- Below 50%, conserve and recharge
Solar Controller Display
Expect 200-400W on a sunny day and 50-100W when it is cloudy. The display tells you exactly how much you are bringing in.
Extending Your Off-Grid Time
- Think in 24-hour cycles of charge and use
- Use a campsite strategically: a common pattern is 3-4 nights wild followed by 1 night on hook-up
- Remember that driving recharges your batteries
Seasonal Solar Strategies
In summer, long days mean easy charging. In spring and autumn, position carefully and watch consumption. In winter, plan more driving and the occasional hook-up to top up.
